The world is still fighting the coronavirus. And everyone is looking at the same numbers: Infections, deaths, mortality rates, ... . The topic Covid-2 dominates everyday life; the economy, professional and school life, global relations and media reports. The debate is about lockdowns and reopening plans, rapid tests and vaccines, high incidence areas and emergency procedures. There are differences around the world. Some countries act faster, others slower; viral variants appear in certain regions while others take hold with a time lag.
For well over a year, scientists have been collaborating in research as never before, overcoming national borders and technical hurdles. They are succeeding because vaccines against covid-19 are now available. Researchers are working on more than 267 potential vaccine candidates, according to the WHO. There are three main developments: Vaccines with vector viruses, inactivated vaccines with viral proteins and mRNA/DNA vaccines. So far four vaccines have been approved and are in use in the EU.
The Corona warning app experienced less success than hoped; many feared too much state surveillance. The app is being further developed: After the launch of the event QR code check-in system, the rapid antigen test results are scheduled for integration in April 2021. According to the latest figures from the Robert Koch Institute (as of March 26, 2021), the Corona Warning app has been downloaded 26.5 million times (14.5 million times in the Google Play Store and 12 million times in the Apple App Store).
Other questions remain open: How dangerous are the new virus variants? Are vaccinated people still contagious? We still need patience. Health protection and risk minimization in the handling of disease and medication are of paramount importance.
